Here is some info from various recurring district events:
(Details from previous years is kept for archival purposes.)
Conventions --
There are two big district-wide conventions each year. In the spring,
usually the first weekend in May, we hold an International
Preliminaries where all quartets vie to earn the right to appear at
the International Contest two months later. The spring convention is
usually held in conjunction with one or more division contests, where
quartets and choruses in that division try to earn enough points to
qualify for the Fall District Contest.
The Fall convention is where the "District Champion" quartet and
chorus are crowned. It is usually held the last weekend in October.
Mini-HEP --
The "Harmony Education
Program" is a weekend in early June when quartets and barbershoppers
get together to learn more about their craft.
Show of Champs --
In an LOL tradition dating back several decades, quartets and choruses
that qualify for the July International competition get together
and put on a show in late June in the Twin Cities. It serves as
both a "dry run" for International, and a way to raise some funds
to help offset travel costs to the big dance. It's also a fun pep
ralley for the fans!
Harmonyworks Open -- One of our
district's great quartets,
HarmonyWorks, does more than just sing. In addition to winning
the district championship in 1985 and earning International
Semifinalist status several times, they also started an annual golf
outing in 1990 as a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish foundation.
COTS
-- The "Chapter Operations
Training Seminar" is a weekend event that has been held in November
and more recently in January, for those in administrative leadership
of their chapters.
