This file is the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for the "LOLnet"
mailing list, for members of SPEBSQSA's Land O' Lakes District.

This file (and pointers to other barbershop files) is available on the
World Wide Web at this URL address:

      http://LOLDistrict.org/lolnet/faq

Also, there is a home page for the LOL district:

       http://LOLDistrict.org

The LOLnet list is sort of an offshoot of the "Harmonet," the mailing
list for barbershop harmony fans worldwide. This FAQ doesn't duplicate
any information found in the Harmonet FAQ; you should read that one
first if you want to know more about how to get general barbershop info
by email.

As with all usenet newsgroups and mailing lists, proper "netiquette"
calls you to read the FAQ files before sending questions to the list.

Sing-cerely,
  - Tom A.

ANSWERS ! means new or changed since last posting
=======
  1. LOLnet MAILING LIST ANSWERS
  --------------------
1.1: What's the LOL barbershop mailing list?

The LOL barbershop mailing list is an email address that relays
messages to a list of subscribers who enjoy barbershop harmony and
want to discuss topics pertinent to the Land O' Lakes District of
    SPEBSQSA.

1.2: How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to the LOL mailing list?

In November 1999, after almost five years of manual effort,
the "BBSLOL" mailing list at Cray was finally moved to an automated
professional mailing list service (and renamed "LOLnet"). This gives
the user complete control over his subscription, and makes for less
work for the moderator, but it does mean that each post will have a
small ad at the end -- two or three lines of text. This helps pay for
    the mailing list service.

    Here is the pertinent info:

      Subscribe: LOLnet-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
      Unsubscribe: LOLnet-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
      List owner: LOLnet-owner@yahoogroups.com (Tom Arneberg)
      List web page: http://www.yahoogroups.com/community/LOLnet

(Don't worry about forgetting this information -- it is appended to
the end of every LOLnet message!)

1.3: How do I send email to everyone on the LOL mailing list?

To send a message to everyone on the LOL mailing list, just email to
    this address:

	   LOLnet@yahoogroups.com

    (Note: the case of the letters in the email address doesn't matter;
if you want to save a few keystrokes, you can use all lowercase.)

1.4: What should I do if a message I send bounces back to me?

Please send bounced email to the list administrator
(LOLnet-owner@yahoogroups.com)...it's not clear yet if bounced email
will go to the sender or not.

1.5: What sort of message is appropriate for the LOL mailing list?

If you want to send email to the LOL list, please restrict the
topics to things of local interest (LOL or Division contests, LOL
quartets and choruses, LOL chapter shows, etc.). Anything of
general barbershop interest (music theory, vocal production,
non-LOL quartets, wind chimes, arrangements, etc.) should be
    discussed on the Harmonet list.

The LOLnet list is really not intended to be a "chat line," it's
more for occasional news. We'd like to keep traffic fairly low
on it, so that no one needs to unsubscribe because they can't keep up.

1.6: Why did my message to LOLnet not go through?

In order to reduce "spam" (junk mail) from polluting it, LOLnet is a
moderated mailing list. This means that each post must be approved
by the moderator. While this makes for a cleaner, higher quality
list, it may mean that there is some lag time between the time you
send your message and the time it gets distributed. Also, it may
not go out at all, if it doesn't meet the criteria (section 1.5).

1.7: Who is on the LOLnet mailing list?

The subscription list is constantly changing, but as of April 2004
there are 532 subscribers. Everyone in LOL is encouraged to
join the list! If you're looking for the email address of a fellow
LOL member, you can search for an email address of someone who is on
the LOLnet list on the web -- just go to this web page:

      http://yahoogroups.com/members/LOLnet

Type in any part of an email address in the box that says "enter
email address" and click on the Search button, and it will give you a
list of everyone on LOLnet whose email address matches that pattern.
You can also click "Download list" to get the completee list of
email addresses (alas, without names, though). :-(

  2. LOL QUESTIONS
  ----------------
2.1: What area does the LOL District cover?

The LOL District covers these states and provinces:
	 - all of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota
	 - all of Manitoba and Saskatchewan
	 - Western Ontario
	 - upper Michigan

2.2: How is LOL split up into divisions?

There are six divisions in the LOL District:

      #1 D1 Division One...southeast Wisconsin
#2 PL Packerland.....northeast Wisconsin, upper Michigan
#3 SW Southwest......southern Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin
      #4 TL 10,000 Lakes...east-central Minn, west-central Wisc, Ontario
#5 RC Red Carpet.....west & north Minn, east N.Dak, east Manitoba
      #6 NW Northwest......Saskatchewan, western N.Dak, west Manitoba

2.3: Who are the current officers of the LOL district?

(I'm still working on this section...if I can ever get the District
Directory in an elecronic format, I'll have a wealth of information
    online!)

2.4: What is the ranking of choruses quartets in the LOL district?

There are about 140 officially registered quartets in the LOL
district, and about 71 choruses. There is an unofficial ranking of
each LOL quartet and chorus that has competed in the last year,
based on their last competition score. The list is sorted by the
normalized score (i.e. percent of total possible).

2.5: Is there a worldwide web home page for the LOL District?

Why, yes there is! I'm glad you finally asked. Here is the address:

         http://LOLDistrict.org
